ABO

ABO (ABO Blood Group System): ABO is a gene that determines an individual’s ABO blood group. It encodes enzymes that modify glycoproteins and glycolipids on the surface of red blood cells, resulting in the different blood types (A, B, AB and O). Variations in this gene are important for blood transfusion compatibility and have also been linked to risks for cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.
